Not all 'green' products are created equal. Here's what Texas families should actually look for — and avoid.
The 'green cleaning' label is one of the most abused terms in the cleaning industry. Companies slap it on everything from genuinely non-toxic plant-based formulas to products that simply removed one harmful ingredient and replaced it with another. For Texas families with dogs, cats, toddlers, or allergy sensitivities — the difference isn't marketing, it's chemistry. Here's how to actually evaluate what goes into your home.
Certifications That Actually Mean Something
EPA Safer Choice: The only government-backed certification requiring full ingredient disclosure and toxicological review. Products with this seal have every ingredient screened for human and environmental safety. Look for this first. MADE SAFE: A non-profit certification screening for known and suspected toxins, including endocrine disruptors. Stricter than most, and especially relevant for homes with children under 5. EWG Verified: Environmental Working Group's own certification, based on their Skin Deep and Guide to Healthy Cleaning databases. Leaping Bunny: Cruelty-free certification — relevant if animal testing is a concern, though this doesn't directly address chemical safety.
Ingredients to Avoid in Texas Homes
Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats): Found in most conventional disinfectants. Effective against pathogens, but linked to respiratory issues and increasingly associated with antibiotic resistance. Formaldehyde releasers: Found in some floor cleaners and fabric treatments. Classified as a known human carcinogen by the IARC. Fragrance/parfum: Catch-all terms that can include hundreds of undisclosed chemicals — many are allergens or sensitizers. Particularly problematic for cedar-fever sufferers in Central Texas, who are already reactive. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): Common in dish soaps and surface cleaners. Skin irritant and aquatic toxin — relevant in Texas given our watershed sensitivity.
The Pet-Safety Question Specifically
Cats are especially vulnerable because they groom residues off their paws and fur after walking on cleaned surfaces. Avoid any product containing pine oil, phenols (found in many disinfectants), or undiluted essential oils around cats. Dogs are more tolerant but can still have reactions to quats and certain synthetic fragrances. For pet households, our standard is EPA Safer Choice certified products with no synthetic fragrance and verified safe for companion animals. All TQ Cleaners products meet this standard as a baseline.
What We Use at TQ Cleaners
All TQ Cleaners products are plant-based, EPA Safer Choice certified, and free from the ingredients listed above. We use fragrance-free formulas in homes with allergy sensitivities and can provide a full product list on request. The products are effective — we're not using baking soda and wishful thinking. They're commercial-grade plant-derived formulas that perform at the same level as conventional products without the chemical load. If you've been hesitant to bring in a cleaning service because of product concerns, we'd welcome the conversation.
